Sonny's BLues

This story was indeed long and filled with ancecdotal information. The narrator went off on to many side conversations with himself and stories about events from his past. He spent a lot of time looking back on such past events in a way to figure out what was happening in the present. In this way he was looking for reasons for Sonny's actions and present behaviors. Also, wondering why Sonny began using heroine. The reason was, as he found out from Sonny, to escape suffering. This is the reason many people take drugs, because they don't want to deal with the problems for themsleves and instead try to cover them and their feelings with drugs. It is a weak way to deal with life. It also seems though, at the end that Sonny finds a different escape through the music. The narrator describes how he sees and hears the musicians enveloped in the intruments and the blues. Most people don't hear what the musicians hear. They only hear sounds. The people within the music hear so much more, that of which I cannot even describe. A feeling much stronger than that of most things. And this is what they live for. This is what Sonny described at the beginning of the story as what he wanted to do with his life, the only thing he wanted to do. His brother doubted him and they broke apart and went seperate ways. In the end, Sonny lived exactly how he had dreamed. He had his music and that seemed to be for him, an incredible satisfaction, that could come from nothing but the blues.

I loved that you talked about the music, because the scene at the end is one of my favorites from this story. it is interesting to hear about people's passions that aren't your own because it is hard to understand their connection to that thing. Music is such a part of our lives, but some more than others and I'm glad you explored that!

Hey caitlin.
I personally enjoyed when the nararator went off onto side conversations and stories. It interested me to see the past, so it was like we were in the head of the narrarator. Seeing the past of Sonny did help me understand why he would do heroin. I'm not saying it was a good decision at all, but he had been through some hard times. I agree that most people do drugs so they can escape from feeling pain, so they can escape from having to worry or be stressed. It seems like the easiest way to get away from everything, to totally forget about everything thats getting to them. It is never the right way to go about fixing your problems but it is defenitly one of the easiest, or so it seemed to Sonny. Out of all the stories we have read for Haunted Houses this one has been my favorite. I havent been able to really relate to any of them, but out of the three we have read i can relate myself mostly to this one.

I really like what you have to say. I have noticed that you write excatly how you talk.

Any how, I agree with you about Sonny's compassion about music. He uses music to escape the world. You would think that his older brother would be able to understand that but obviously he doesn't think that this is a great profession. Music can take you away to mystical places that maybe only you can find and when you try to reavel those places to others they tend to shut you out. This was an excellent story.

Oh and PS...
i also liked how you talked about the music part, not many people have in their entries. It made me so happy when SOnny went to music to help him out instead of drugs, becuase i think that music is one of the most powerful things, and can totally help you out during hard times. It is so different from drugs, but also the same. YOu lose yourself in it and it makes you forget about everything else.

I agree Caitlin. I do think that Sonny was trying to get away from the darkness. I thought about it at the beginning when his brother was saying someting about the darkness roaring outside. I think the darkness is to be the constant drug usage going on in the neighborhood. I also thought about how he wanted to shut the window to keep the trash can smell out and how it linked to him in prison and how he said he was "smelling himself".

Hey Caitlin
This is a very interesting thing you have said. I agree with everything you said about the music and the drugs. I also thought it was interesting how The Narrator seemed to get kind of crazy in his quest to ensure Sonny's safety. I really enjoyed all the sudden changes in character in this story as well, as you mentioned in your post.

I like what you had to say and it made me think more about what I wrote. I agree that the narrarotor went off on too many side conversations, but in a way i think that what he said was good. Some of them seemed necessary, others were not. the one about his mother and father, i thought was good to hear becuase it helped us to figure out more about Sonny and his brother.
I feel like music can be the same escape as drugs can be for some people. All people need to do is to find their escape, find something that they are passionate about and be safe with it

Yes, the story was indeed long. the length made it hard to kept up. I did not like the narrator going off into the conversations and the flashbacks or storytelling. it created so much confusion. When Sonny got hooked on music instead of a drug I was relieved. music is a great way to express yourself. Music is a sweet escape.
